Perrone wins UCEA award

Frank Perrone, Assistant Professor in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, has won the Jack A. Culbertson Award from the University Council for Educational Administration.

Perrone said he was elated and grateful to win the award, adding the support from colleagues like Chad Lochmiller meant a great deal to him.

Perrone’s current research includes a study that explores the practices of principal preparation programs that have proven successful at increasing diversity in the pipeline. The research team is excited about how programs can use this information to improve their programs in ways that increase diversity in the principal profession.

His recognition is very well-deserved and it recognizes a colleague whose scholarship is rising in prominence and impact. [His] scholarship, teaching and service have made many meaningful contributions to the program in a very short time.

“We know that principals of color play critical roles in outcomes for teachers and students of color. However, the principalship remains overwhelmingly White (roughly 80%) even though the majority of U.S. K-12 students are not. A substantial portion of this disproportionate representation can be traced back to issues of inequity and discrimination across the entire principal pipeline,” he added.

Lochmiller nominated Perrone for the award and said Perronewas widely supported by leading scholars in the field of Educational Leadership and by colleagues in the program: “Collectively, we all agreed that his recognition is very well-deserved and it recognizes a colleague whose scholarship is rising in prominence and impact.  As a faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Perrone’s scholarship, teaching and service have made many meaningful contributions to the program in a very short time. What is more compelling, though, is his empathetic orientation to students, genuine care for colleagues, and respect for practitioners in the field. All of these make him a truly unique but unquestionably deserving recipient.”

The Jack A. Culbertson Award is presented annually to an outstanding junior educational leadership professor  in recognition of his/her significant contributions to the field of educational leadership.  Individuals nominated must have been professors for six years or fewer, and currently serve in a UCEA university.

Perrone joins four other colleagues from the IU School of Education who have received this award.
