Students who wish to enroll in more than the maximum number of credits need official permission from the School of Education.
A credit overload consists of:
- More than 20 credits in Fall or Spring Semester;
- More than 20 credits overall in Summer Session;
- More than 6 credits in a 4-week Summer Session;
- More than 10 credits in a 6-week or 8-week Summer Session.
In order to request an overload, please complete the form linked below. Be ready to explain why you believe an overload is justified and feasible, as well as why you believe you will be successful in your coursework. If your GPA is 3.0 or above, and you have no pending Incompletes, the advisor will consult with faculty and then make a decision.
If your GPA is below 3.0, or if the advisor does not feel that an overload is in your best interests, you may then submit your request to the Academic Standards Committee, which will consider your rationale, your past course history, the advisor’s recommendation, and the advice of program faculty. This type of request can be sent from your IU e-mail address to edmajor@indiana.edu with “Request for Credit Overload” in the subject line.
Note: Please submit your request well before the beginning of the semester for which you are requesting an overload. Requests cannot be considered after the first week of the semester. Requests that go before the Academic Standards Committee may require up to one month to consider.
