My program of research focuses, broadly, on prevention of substance use and substance use disorders among adolescents and emerging adults with emphases on Latino and college student populations. Currently, I am working on a project developing a parent-based prevention program for incoming college students to reduce risk for problematic alcohol use and alcohol related sexual assault.
In terms of clinical practice, I am interested in Latino mental health and substance abuse treatment, including providing services for Spanish speaking clients. To this end, I have developed a specialty practicum, CHGUnido, in order to train Spanish-speaking students in the provision of mental health services in Spanish and to increase access to Spanish language mental health services in the Bloomington community. Students provide services in a variety of settings including our training clinic and a local health clinic. **Students who are interested in training in the provision of mental health services in Spanish through in the CHGUnido specialty practicum should be fluent Spanish speakers.
