Transition to Teaching offers non-traditional path to the classroom

After finishing his undergraduate degree in sports marketing and management at Indiana University, Dominic Colby made a shift in his future plans and wanted to become a teacher. By joining the Transition to Teaching program within the IU School of Education, he’s able to do just that.

Transition to Teaching offers an accelerated program for people with a bachelor’s degree in another field or for those teaching on an emergency license to pursue a teaching license in Indiana. The program is a perfect fit for people like Colby who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and are considering teaching as a career, and also a great pathway to licensure while teaching on an emergency license, as you can continue to work in your school while receiving university support.

As part of the program, Colby was a student teacher in Fort Wayne, an experience he called flawless: “My mentor teacher was amazing and taught me a litany about what it means to be a teacher and skills that will help me accomplish this. I taught geography and world history honors, and it was a great time, and the relationships I built with the students and teachers were awesome.”

Besides earning his teaching license, Colby’s goal for his future classroom is to ensure the classes he teaches provide his students with a high level of learning while building relationships and developing them into future leaders in the community.
