Jacks Cheng, a Ph.D. student in Counseling and Educational Psychology, has been awarded the Social Science and Humanities Research Council doctoral award from the Canadian federal government and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – société et culture (Québec Research Funds - Society and Culture) from the Québec provincial government. Cheng’s research focuses on the broad strokes of minority experiences in traditional masculine spaces – currently, he is working on projects involving female students’ experiences in STEM fields, female women of color who work in STEM jobs and Asian men’s experiences of the gay community. Specifically, this award will help him support his dissertation regarding Asian men’s development of masculinity and career identity.
“I was extremely thrilled that my efforts and achievements have been recognized at both the provincial and national levels in my home country of Canada, and it was a testament of the growth I have gained in the last three years as I had applied for the awards three times,” Cheng remarked. “I think these awards have also been particularly meaningful as I am a multiple minority researcher whose research efforts on intersectionality of minority experiences have been affirmed by my Canadian and Quebecker colleagues.”
