Dr. Stephanie Power-Carter, Associate Professor of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education, has been honored with the 2018 William H. Wiggins Faculty Award in Support of Teaching and Mentoring in the African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University (AAADS).

“This award means a lot because it was named in honor of Dr. Wiggins, a thoughtful scholar and very special person that welcomed me when I stepped foot on this campus almost 17 year ago, and a very dear family that still continues to give me and my son big hugs and a lot of love,” Power-Carter said.

She was also quick to note the legacy of AAADS: “This department has also played a huge role in advocating and supporting students, faculty, and community members around issues of equity and inclusion.”

Dr. Power-Carter has served as director of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, and has coordinated the Annual African American Read-In, a program that helps kick off Black History Month each February and brings hundreds of local high school students to IU to read original and classic poetry and spoken word performances. 

The William H. Wiggins Faculty Award is given to an adjunct faculty whose support of AAADS is both exemplary and beneficial to the pedagogical mission of the department. It is one of the department's highest honors for faculty.
