History, Philosophy, and Policy in Education

Apply humanities and social science perspectives to the theory and practice of education and/or problem-solving in various educational contexts.

Examine educational practices across time and cultures and gain a deeper understanding of the philosophical and historical underpinnings of education, as well as the social, political, and cultural forces that drive education practice and policy.

Work to improve your effectiveness as an educator, or pursue a career as policymakers, policy analysts, and education leaders in the private sector, or with public institutions and nonprofit organizations.

Our faculty’s interests range from the moral and ethical implications of education choice and standardized assessment to citizenship education and secondary education reform in emerging democracies. Their global focus ranges from teacher preparation in Indonesia, to schooling for democracy in South Africa, to the impact of slavery on contemporary American education.

Wherever your own scholarly interests take you, you’ll find a willing mentor to help you plan your degree program, choose research topics, and guide your intellectual growth.
