Honoring Languge Educators

The Harste Alternative Literacies Fellowship was established in 1995 to fund doctoral students in the Literacy, Culture, and Language Education Department who have an interest in exploring an expanded definition of literacy, including art, music, dance, drama, and newer multimodal communication systems.

Dr. Jerome C. Harste taught at Indiana University from 1970 - 2006, becoming the first Armstrong Chair in the School of Education in 1997. He has received numerous awards for his work in early literacy including, the David H. Russell Research Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. In 1997 he was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame. At Indiana University he received the Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Teaching Award. He has served on the Board of the International Reading Association as well as the President of the National Reading Conference, the Whole Language Umbrella, and the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy and the National Council of Teachers in English. Professor Harste’s wife, Janice, received her teaching degree from Indiana University and shares his love of children’s literature. She and her husband are founders of Inquiring Voices Press, a Bloomington-based publishing company that specialized in children’s books which invited inquiry-based learning.
