Art and Mary both credit much of their success and happiness to Indiana University. Art received his master of science in education (’69) as well as his doctorate (’71) from the IU Bloomington campus where he met his wife, Mary. Also a School of Education alum, Mary obtained two IU degrees—a bachelor’s in education (’70) and a master’s in library sciences (’71). Art went on to serve as president of Scottsdale Community College for 30 years, where he helped grow the institution that now enrolls over 10,000 students. Art is recognized both on campus and on a national scale for his accomplishments. He was awarded by the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa International Honor Society with a lifetime achievement award and is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education. In 2010, the college honored his dedication by naming the Arthur W. DeCabooter Athletic Complex. He is well known in his community of Scottsdale, Arizona, for his work with various organizations that include the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce and the Scottsdale Rotary Club. He also serves on several boards that support education, including the School of Education’s Board of Visitors and the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees.

Through his work with the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, Art has successfully advocated for the funding of two fellowships in the IU School of Education. The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust honors Virginia Piper’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy and has awarded more than $88 million in grants to organizations. Ms. Piper’s legacy lives on through her foundation, which is recognized as one of the nation’s 100 largest.
