Three teachers have been honored with the Jacobs Educator Award for their contributions to integrating technology with classroom learning. The Center for Research on Learning and Technology at the IU School of Education selected teachers from across the country based on a personal statement and video about how they use technology to support inquiry and problem-based learning.
Award winners give back to the educational community by connecting with faculty at the School of Education to create short reports that will provide teachers with best practices.
The three winners of the Jacobs Educator Awards are:
Valerie Anglemyer is a seventh grade Language Arts/Humanities teacher at NorthWood Middle School in Wakarusa, Indiana. She also serves as her school’s instructional coach. Valerie has a passion for global learning and uses inquiry-based projects, , to foster curiosity, innovation, and action.
Dr. Maggie McHugh is a teacher/advisor at La Crosse Design Institute, a project-based charter middle school in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Dr. McHugh regularly implements technology enhanced projects with her students, from creating sculptures for 3-D printing, to coding Spheros, to paint murals as she effectively integrates one-to-on iPads for her sixth through eighth grade designers. Dr. McHugh received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico State University, with a focus on Project-Based Social Justice Mathematics.
Rebecca Hodge is a middle school science teacher at Ilima Intermediate School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. She embraces education and learning that is lifelong, promotes the development of positive relationships among students, faculty, staff, and administrators and fosters academic achievement. Her first career was as a microbiologist before pursuing her passion as an educator. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University in Education (elementary education, middle level mathematics, & middle level science).
The Jacobs Educator Award honors outstanding Pre-K-12 teachers who use technology in the classroom. Jacobs Educators are part of a nation-wide community of highly successful teachers who work with the world renowned education faculty at the School of Education in a variety of capacities, including teaching, research, and special projects and events. The Jacobs Educators will be coming to the IU campus to meet with School of Education Faculty and Graduate students to be honored and to create research-to-practice briefs that help bring IU faculty research to become usable by practitioners.
The Jacobs Teacher Educator Award is possible though a $1 million gift from the late Barbara B. Jacobs. Her philanthropy established the Jacobs Chair in Education and Technology at the IU School of Education in 1998; this award is part of that gift.
