About Me
I am Professor Emeritus in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University (USA). My Ph.D. is from the University of Chicago. I have also taught at Bank Street College, Louisiana State University, University of Utah, and Florida State University. I have also been a visiting faculty member at the University of Reading (England) and the University of Otago (New Zealand).
My research interests include school leadership and school reform, leadership development and professional identities. I have recently conducted research on successful school principals and professional identities of school leaders in reform contexts.
My most recent book is the second edition of the Handbook of Research on the Education of School Leaders (w/Young, Routledge). I have also written The Principalship: New Roles in a Professional Learning Community (w/Matthews, published by Allyn and Bacon) and Finding One’s Way: How Mentoring Can Lead to Dynamic Leadership (w/Matthews, Corwin press). I am also a co-editor of the International Handbook on the Preparation and Development of School Leaders (2008). My articles have appeared in Educational Administration Quarterly, Educational Management, Administration and Leadership (UK), Journal of Educational Administration (Australia), and Journal of School Leadership. I am a past president of the University Council for Educational Administration and founding editor of the Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership. Recently I was a recipient of the Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the University Council for Educational Administration.
