Chronicling 100 years of history through a new book about the IU School of Education

Written by Frederic Lieber, “A Disciplined Mind and Cultivated Heart: Indiana University School of Education at 100” tells the rich, illustrated history of the state’s leading research and teacher education institution.

The history of the IU School of Education has been told for the first time through a new book. Written by Frederic Lieber, “A Disciplined Mind and Cultivated Heart: Indiana University School of Education at 100” tells the rich, illustrated history of the state’s leading research and teacher education institution.

The story begins with the founding of Indiana University in 1820. Against great odds, the School of Education advanced from a handful of students and professors in the early nineteenth century to one of the top schools of education. The book shifts to 1923 when the school was authorized to award its own degree and concludes in the present day where the school continues to discover new meaning in its century-old traditions.

Looking back on its 100 years, the school has become a thriving institution providing Indiana and the world with outstanding teachers, counselors, educational leaders, and ground-breaking research.

As we conclude our 100th anniversary celebration, I hope you find this book informative and that it leaves you inspired by all that has been accomplished and hopeful for the future of education in the state of Indiana and beyond.

Dean Stacy Morrone

"This is the inaugural account chronicling the history of the Indiana University School of Education, spanning from the University's inception to the present day. It offers historical context to both public education in Indiana and the School of Education at Indiana University,” Lieber explained. "A pivotal aspect of the school's history lies in the persistent efforts of education advocates in Indiana, who, despite economic and social challenges, endeavored to bring education to every Hoosier doorstep."

“Here at the IU School of Education we proudly say, ‘education changes lives,’” School of Education Dean Anastasia Morrone said. “As we conclude our 100th anniversary celebration, I hope you find this book informative and that it leaves you inspired by all that has been accomplished and hopeful for the future of education in the state of Indiana and beyond.”
