Jessie Horcher
Elementary & Special Education TAL (May 2015)
Why did you choose to become a teacher or educator?
I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I loved working with children & helping them learn & grow. Teaching has given me the chance to profoundly impact the lives of children. Teaching is tough work but it is so rewarding.
Why did you choose to attend IU SOE over other institutions?
Specifically the TAL program was a major factor in choosing IU. I felt it made me very marketable but also prepared me in a very wholesome way. I was excited about the idea of being a really inclusive teacher. I also was a direct admit to the SOE which offered perks over other universities. Lastly, the Global Gateway for Teacher's program gave me the chance to learn abroad which was an experience that was very important to me when choosing a school.
What career path or job has your major/degree led you to and what do you hope to continue to do with your degree?
I have taught in both public & private institutions; in the US and abroad; and in general elementary as well as special education. I pursued a masters degree in English Language Learners. I feel very fulfilled in the impact I have made as a teacher. I am currently pursuing another career path. The skills of a teacher are very translatable to many different avenues. I always know I can return to teaching if the right pieces fall into place.
