Celebrating Black History Month with music from the African American Choral Ensemble

The African American Choral Ensemble performs in the School of Education Atrium in 2024

As Black History Month celebrations continue across IU, the IU School of Education looks forward to a special event of our own: the annual concert from the African American Choral Ensemble. Located within the Atrium, this year’s concert will be on Wednesday, February 26, starting at 11:45 a.m.

“The opportunity to unite the IU community for this annual event has consistently been one of the most cherished moments of our academic year,” said Raymond Wise, AACE Executive Director. “This year’s concert, as in years past, will feature AACE performing works composed by African American composers across a diverse range of genres, including spirituals, anthems, gospel, R&B, and inspirational songs.”

Additionally, Wise added, “Continuing a cherished tradition, we extend an invitation to faculty, staff, alumni, family, and friends to join us in forming a mass choir for the grand finale of the concert. We eagerly anticipate a truly memorable celebration.”

And while you’re enjoying the concert, be sure to look for the portraits of Elder Watson Diggs and Martha Dawson on the second floor.

Diggs became the first African American to graduate with a degree from the Indiana University School of Education in 1916. While at IU, Diggs and nine other African American students founded Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in 1911.

Dawson joined the Indiana University School of Education faculty in 1970 and became the first African American woman to receive tenure at Indiana University Bloomington.

Both portraits were officially installed in the Wright building last year, creating an ongoing tribute to Black legacy and excellence at the IU School of Education.
