IMPACT

Initiative for Mentoring, Professional Advancement, and Career Tenure (IMPACT): An IU School of Education/AmeriCorps Project

The Indiana University School of Education (IU SoE), in partnership with AmeriCorps, aims to improve pre-service teacher education in Southwest Central Indiana. This project has undergraduate and graduate students serve as AmeriCorps Service Members who facilitate tutoring and informal education programs while simultaneously building capacity for local underserved schools and educational organizations in the region.

These programs, specifically pertaining to STEM, mathematics education, and literacy are designed to aid the participating undergraduate and graduate students’ early exposures to teaching and, ultimately, strengthen the region’s teacher pipelines. Each program is facilitated by IU undergraduate and graduate students under the direction of IU SoE faculty.

IMPACT programs take place during the academic year in public schools and libraries and are designed to provide sustained engagement for elementary and middle school-age youth. Since 2023, 41 participating IU students/AmeriCorps members have supported more than 725 elementary and middle school students through after school STEM programs and one-on-one mathematics and literacy tutoring.

The program has been a tremendous asset to our school community, especially in providing targeted support in ELA and Math for students that are struggling. Last semester, the IMPACT program helped nearly 50 McCormick's Creek Elementary students. IU students worked with at-risk students in grades 3–6 to strengthen their reading and math skills. These connections provided positive role models and supported academic growth while also building confidence, curiosity, and a belief in each students’ potential. We look forward to continuing and expanding this mutually beneficial program.
