HESA Op-Ed Essays

This year the graduating master’s class wrote Op-Ed’s focused on topics within higher education. Each student presented the op-ed to the class for discussion throughout the semester. At the conclusion of the semester, the class identified 2 Op-Ed’s to be part of the May HESA Highlights. We are delighted to share the following two pieces:

Emily Arth receives the HESA 2022 Elizabeth A. Greenleaf Distinguished Alumni Award

Emily Arth (M.S.Ed.’06) received the 2022 Elizabeth A. Greenleaf Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is presented annually to a graduate of the master’s degree program in Higher Education and Student Affairs who exemplifies “the sincere commitment, professional leadership and personal warmth” of Betty Greenleaf, for whom the award is named. Emily Arth was recently appointed the Director of the Office of Scholarships at IU Bloomington. She also continues to serve as the interim Director of Development. During her 17 years at IU Bloomington, Emily has demonstrated a commitment to supporting our students and has exhibited strong managerial skills in her progressive leadership roles spanning four offices in Enrollment Management; Admissions, FYE, Scholarships, and was the Founding Director of the OEM Office of Development. Additionally, Emily’s current focus is to position a stronger connection between scholarships and philanthropy, to support undergraduate students. 

HESA Alum promoted to Assistant Professor at USC

HESA Alum (M.S.Ed.’06) Dr. Cory M. Buckner has been promoted to Assistant Professor of Clinical Education in the Rossier School of Education at The University of Southern California in their Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs program. Dr. Bukner is passionate about dedicating his life to inspiring and empowering future equity-minded agents of change to tap into their gifts, so they can inspire others to do the same.

HESA Doctoral Student Selected as Faculty for Association of Student Conduct Administrators Academy

Jackie Stelmaszczyk (she/her), a current HESA doctoral student, was selected as a Faculty Member for the Student Organization Misconduct track at the Donald D. Gehring Academy, sponsored by the Association of Student Conduct Administrators (ASCA). The Gehring Academy is an intensive program designed for participants to learn through a competency-based model. There are multiple tracks offered led by faculty who have expertise in the specific content area. Those selected as faculty for the Academy are student conduct and legal professionals that represent the best of the student conduct field and Association. The work faculty does at the Academy shapes the future skill-base, quality, and direction of student conduct. The Gehring Academy will take place July 18-22, 2022 virtually. Jackie has previously been recognized by ASCA for her contributions to student conduct as the 2020 recipient of the Dr. Felice Dublon Award of Excellence. 

HESA Alum named Executive Director of the Institute for Well-being

HESA Alum Dr. Bridget Yuhas (M.S.Ed.’06, Ed.D.’18) was named Executive Director of the Institute for Well-being at Butler University where she will serve as the primary investigator for the Student Well-being Institutional Support Survey (SWISS). SWISS is a national study that looks into student perceptions of their institutions' support for their well-being. It's the only national survey that looks at student well-being from an institutional perspective and gives actionable information to practitioners on the climate for well-being in academics; diversity, equity, and inclusion; basic needs; financial literacy; meaning and purpose; and more. To date 19 institutions and more than 16,000 students have participated in the study. SWISS is accepting institutions for the fall 2022 administration at swiss@butler.edu. 

HESA Doctoral Student wins NASPA Award

HESA Doctoral Student Colleen E. Lofton won the 2022 National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) Gender and Sexuality Knowledge Community Service Award. The award is given to someone that has made a significant contribution or rendered distinguished service to NASPA and Gender and Sexuality Knowledge Community.

Dr. Daniel M. Maxwell appointed to new Position

HESA Alum Dr. Daniel M. Maxwell (Ed.D.’ 16) has been appointed the Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services for the University of Houston System and the Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services.  They previously served as the Associate Vice Chancellor/Associate Vice President for Student Affairs for the University of Houston.

HESA Alum Selected at Diversity Scholar 

HESA Alum, Dr. Christen Priddie (Ph.D. ’21) was selected as a Diversity Scholar for the 2022 R Studio conference in July. The R Studio conference is dedicated to folks wanting to learn more about the R platform and discover new ways to use R for research and data science purposes. Christen’s goal as a Diversity Scholar is to find new and innovative ways to use an open-source program such as R to study Black people in higher education. She is currently a Postdoctoral Research with the National Survey of Student Engagement here at Indiana University.

HESA Assistant Professor wins Trustee Teaching Award

HESA Assistant Professor, Dr. Cindy Ann Kilgo was awarded the 2022 Indiana University Trustees Teaching Awards. The Trustee's Teaching Awards are given each spring to honor outstanding teaching during the prior calendar year. The award honors faculty who have had a positive impact on student learning, especially undergraduates. Department chairs and deans identify candidates for the award. In addition, they will formally take on the Chair of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Queer Studies Special Interest Group (SIG) at AERA 2022 in San Diego, CA. For the past year, they have served as Chair-Elect.

HESA Alum wins McKnight Doctoral Fellowship

HESA Alum, Johnnie Allen Jr. (M.S.Ed. '22), an incoming doctoral student in the Higher Education Program at Florida State University, has been named a recipient of the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship (MDF) from the Florida Education Fund. The MDF program aims to address the underrepresentation of African American and Hispanic faculty at colleges and universities in the state of Florida by increasing the pool of citizens qualified with Ph.D. degrees to teach at the college and university levels.
