HESA Faculty Releases 3rd Edition of Book

School of Education Executive Associate Dean and HESA Professor Dr. Vasti Torres, along with Dr. Susan R. Jones and Dr. Jan Arminio, have released the 3rd edition of their book, Negotiating the Complexities of Qualitative Research . The new edition includes more approaches including Participatory Action Research, Critical Discourse Analysis, and visual methodologies and methods. In addition, there is a new chapter on writing that covers getting started, writing an analysis, writing to capture complexity, and positioning oneself in writing.

HESA Doctoral Candidate named Curriculum Development Specialist

HESA Doctoral Candidate, Constance Skinner has been named a Curriculum Development Specialist at the IU School of Medicine. In this role, they will have a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives.

HESA Faculty appointed to new role

HESA Associate Professor Dr. Lucy LePeau has been named the Presidential Faculty Fellow for the Board of Aeons. The Board of Aeons is a student research and advisory organization that works to provide the University President student perspectives on campus issues. In addition, she has been appointed as Director of the  Center for Postsecondary Research.

New Directors named to the National Survey of Student Engagement

HESA Assistant Professor Dr. Cindy Ann Kilgo, and HESA Affiliated Faculty Dr. Jillian Kinzie, have been appointed as Interim Co-Directors of the National Survey of Student Engagement. They will serve in this role until a new director is named. 

HESA Alum Retires from IU

Lisa M. (Heinzen) Scully (M.S. ’87) retired as Senior Associate Registrar from the Indiana University Bloomington Office of the Registrar in December 2021 after a thirty-seven-plus year at IU. During her career she served as president of the state Indiana Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Association, was published in the national AACRAO’s Colleges and Universities periodical and contributed to AACRAO’s professional development text Leadership Lessons: Visions and Values for a New Generation. Lisa was awarded an IU Bicentennial Medal in 2020 and in 1994 was named an IU Professional Staff Merit Award winner.

HESA Faculty Member Retiring

After serving Indiana University since 2008, HESA Associate Professor and Senior Associate Director of the Center for Postsecondary Research, Dr. Alex McCormick will be retiring from the School of Education in February. During his tenure, Dr. McCormick has helped to transform the NSSE survey by providing revisions and new models that have helped institutions improve the undergraduate experience. The School of Education and the HESA community are thankful for his many contributions and wish him a happy retirement.

Call for Alumni Award Nominations

We are soliciting nominations for the Elizabeth A. Greenleaf and Robert H. Shaffer Awards. Nominations are being accepted through January 31, 2022.

The Elizabeth A. Greenleaf Award is presented annually to a graduate of the master's degree program who exemplifies "the sincere commitment, professional leadership and personal warmth" of Betty Greenleaf, for whom the award is named. The Robert H. Shaffer Award is presented to a graduate of the Higher Education doctoral program who exemplifies outstanding service to the student affairs profession.
