Frequently Asked Questions About COVID-19 Disruption

Fall 2020 Overseas Placements

My overseas placement was cancelled, but I would still like to have an overseas school experience once travel is allowed. Can I postpone my placement?

Students who were scheduled to travel this fall have the option to postpone their placement to later in the spring or summer of 2021. Students should contact Global Gateway staff to discuss their options.

I was awarded a Global Gateway scholarship for my fall placement. Can I still use it if I postpone my placement to the spring or summer of 2021?

Global Gateway scholarships are intended to support undergraduates participating in the Overseas Program. December graduates will not be able to use scholarships if they postpone until spring. Students should contact Global Gateway staff to discuss how their graduation date will impact scholarships and what their options might be.

Where can I learn more about IU’s decisions regarding IU’s cancellation of overseas programs and placements?

Please read the Office of Overseas Study’s Statement on Coronavirus Outbreak here: https://overseas.iu.edu/about/blog/news/2020-01-27.html

Who should I contact in the Global Gateway for Teachers office to discuss my options?

Contact either Dr. Stachowski at stachows@indiana.edu, Dr. Stuehling atastuehli@indiana.edu, or phone 812-856-8507.

Spring 2021 Overseas Placements

I am scheduled to travel overseas in March, 2021. Is my placement still on?

IU has made no decisions about spring semester travel. We plan to continue with Spring 2021 placements, but IU is closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and following guidance from national and international organizations, such as World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, and the U.S. Department of State. We will be in touch with Spring 2021 student teachers throughout the fall semester as we get more information, and students may be asked to delay their departure until later in the semester (e.g., late April or early May) to allow for a greater chance of normal travel. If needed, students can discuss the length their placement with Global Gateway staff if the change in departure date is a concern.

Although Spring 2021 is a long way off, I am getting nervous about my plan to go overseas. What should I do?

Students who have concerns about traveling should contact Global Gateway staff to discuss their options. We are not asking students to make any decisions now. It is too early, and the status of the pandemic may change within a few months.

Fall 2020/Spring 2021 Preparatory Phase: Navajo Nation, Overseas, and Urban Programs

I will not be student teaching until the 2021-2022 academic year, but I know that I need to join the Preparatory Phase this year. I am interested in student teaching either overseas, on the Navajo Reservation, or in Chicago Public Schools. Should I still join now even though travel is not happening currently?

Yes! While we cannot predict the status of the pandemic in the future, we are hopeful that normal travel will resume well before Fall 2021. We expect to have a large group of student teachers preparing for Global Gateway school placements in 2021-2022, overseas, on the Reservation, and in Chicago Public Schools. We hope you will join us! We will continue to monitor the situation, and will keep students updated throughout the year. Students are welcome to contact Global Gateway staff with questions or concerns.
