Dean addresses trustees on School of Education quality and innovations
In the second session of a two-part discussion about the future of K-12 education, the Indiana University trustees invited Dean Gerardo Gonzalez to speak about the IU School of Education and how it is preparing teachers for the developing needs of today’s learners. Gonzalez spoke during a public session of the trustees titled "Quality, Innovation and Impact: Preparing the Next Generation of Heroes for Our Nation's Schools" on Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU Bloomington campus.
Professors Krista Glazewski and Gary Crow also spoke about particularly innovative programs during the presentation. Glazewski, associate professor of instructional systems technology, shared the work she is conducting with Jacobs Chair of Instructional Technology Professor Tom Brush called the “W.2 Technology-Supported Problem-Based Application.” Crow, professor and chair of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, shared information regarding The Effective Leaders Academy and the Executive Ed.D. program, which are joint projects with the Kelley School of Business.
The public was invited to the first part of the discussion which was held at the board's August meeting. At that session, three nationally recognized education researchers on issues facing K-12 schools delivered remarks on "Forging a Better Future for K-12 Education" and engaged in a question-and-answer session with trustees. The second discussion, held in conjunction with the regular IU Board of Trustees meeting, was also open to the public.
Gonzalez made a presentation about how the school is recruiting and preparing highly talented undergraduate students and preparing them to be teachers. Gonzalez noted that both the 2011 and 2012 Indiana Teachers of the Year are School of Education graduates and that the recently-announced 2013 Indiana Teacher of the Year Suzanne Whitton earned her classroom preparation from the IU School of Education at IUPUI. He also shared a short video with the trustees with several award-winning alumni reflecting on what they took from their IU School of Education experience. The Dean noted the rising quality of incoming students, due in large part to the Direct Admit Scholars program. In addition, Gonzalez provided an overview of innovative research the faculty is conducting and discussed the national rankings of the school’s graduate programs.
