Rob Kunzman, professor of curriculum studies and philosophy of education was named the new Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong Chair for Teacher Education, leading programing for the Armstrong Teacher Educator Awards.
The Armstrong awards, which began in 1997, afford teachers an opportunity to participate in professional development and work with IU faculty and students studying to be teachers.
Kunzman on the Armstrong Awards:
"The Armstrong Teacher Educator program is a tremendous asset for the School of Education, enabling us to partner with exemplary P-12 teachers from around the state. The Armstrong Teacher panel discussions, which focus on a variety of topics such as technology in the classroom, differentiating instruction, creating a positive classroom culture, and navigating controversial issues, are among the most widely attended professional development events in the School of Education."
Superintendents and principals from around Indiana nominate teachers for the Armstrong Teacher Educator Award based on patterns of outstanding teaching and school leadership. Nominees must demonstrate a potential to work effectively as mentors and role models for pre-service teachers.
More than 150 Indiana teachers have been selected as Armstrong Teacher Educators. Several Armstrong teachers have been Indiana Teacher of the Year finalists. Indiana Teacher of the Year for 2011 Stacy McCormack was named an Armstrong Teacher Educator just before earning the statewide honor.
"The Armstrong Teachers provide vital perspectives from the field that challenge and inform our aspiring teacher candidates. Rob Kunzman, a valued scholar and leader in the School of Education, is the perfect lead for this initiative.”
