Jillian Balaskas

Orland Park, IL

Major:
Elementary Education

Why I chose education:
I want to be apart of the change within the future generations; making education and classrooms a happy place for everyone.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
The community - it is wild how similar, yet different all of the Ed students are. I feel like we all bounce off of each other constantly, which is possible since the School of Ed is big, but still small enough to really embrace each others ideas and thoughts.

Maddie Bogart

Flemington, NJ

Major:
Special Education/Elementary Education (Teaching All Learners)

Why I chose education:
I love being around kids.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
All of the opportunities it offers and the great professors we get to work with!

Sammi Boyle

Mokena, IL

Major:
Elementary Education

Why I chose education:
I rarely felt supported during my schooling which lead to me feeling helpless a lot of the time. I want to be a teacher to make sure that students don’t have that same feeling and can have a better experience. Learning is fascinating and should be fun and my goal is to help students love the learning process.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
My favorite thing about the school of Ed is how much the professors and instructors care about teaching and how much they care about you becoming a great teacher. Everyone in the building has amazing experience working with students in classrooms or beyond and the teach from real life experiences. Everybody wants you to succeed and will go out of their way to help you! The school of Ed had a very comforting and supportive environment and it is a special and wonderful place to be.

Melina Burnah

Albany, NY

Major:
Elementary Education with a license addition in Teaching English as a New Language and a concentration in History

Why I chose education:
I have always thought education is a key to success and a way to open doors for all young people. I want to be a person students can look up to and know that someone will always believe in their capabilities. I also am bi-racial and want to work in high diversity settings to show young minority students they have someone who can relate to them, and see a leadership figure who looks like them in the classroom.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
How small it is. It feels like a small community where you know so many familiar faces but you have the perks of being at a large university and all of the academic and social opportunities that come with that.

Anna Emmert

Columbus, IN

Major:
Counseling and Psychology

Why I chose education:
I want to be a counselor to work with students to help them better themselves and support them in their adolescence.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
The close community we have here.

Rebecca Gordon

Roslyn, NY

Major:
Early Childhood Education

Why I chose education:
I enjoy seeing children grasp new concepts, and I find it rewarding to be able to teach them. I think it is incredible to pass on new knowledge to the next generation of students, and I enjoy working with young learners. I am very excited to become a teacher in the future and to apply everything I learned at the IU School of Education to use in my classroom.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
My favorite aspect of the IU School of Education is the sense of community and the close relationships I have with my classmates and teachers.

Avie Jarka

Edina, MN

Major:
Secondary Education with a focus in Biology

Why I chose education:
I have moved all over the country growing up and have been fortunate enough to see different styles of teaching wherever we move. I want to become a teacher so that I too can make my students feel welcome just like each of my teachers did when I was the new kid in school.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
How quickly we get to start teaching in classrooms. Being able to figure out what age and subject you love teaching so early on in our careers really does help us strive to become the best teachers.

Sydney Newman

Detroit, MI

Major:

I want to be a teacher because I want to be able to teach my students skills in the world in order to be most successful in their own ways, as well as it being my passion.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
The sense of community.

Kaetie Reuter

Mackenzie Roe

Ashley Truman

New Palestine, IN

Major:
Elementary Education with Areas of Concentrations in Mathematics and the Arts

Why I chose education:
I am passionate and want to become a teacher because I want to be the person that students can rely on. I want to build positive relationships with my students and make a difference in their lives. For some students that come into my classroom, I may be the only adult that tells them that they are proud of them or that listens to what they truly have to say. This is the main reason that I am passionate about teaching so that I can make a difference and empower my students. I want to make the difference of being a trusting person and making students realize that there are people that want to see them be successful and want to be there for them. I want to make a positive impact on education and empower our youth to advocate for change and to advocate for themselves as well.

Favorite thing about the School of Ed:
My favorite thing about the school of education is the positive atmosphere and study opportunities that are provided. The staff along with the students in the School of Education are always willing to help you and always provide a smile when you see anyone, even if you may not know them. The School of Education is a small community within IU that allows students to grow and feel welcomed. I also believe that the study spaces in the School of Education may be my favorite opportunity that the School of Education has to offer. It is always a quiet atmosphere that is dedicated to helping students learn and thrive in their school work. There are many study spots including the atrium, the library, and hidden individual study areas on the second floor.
