Where does your international research/engagement take place?
Puerto Rico and Haiti
Please briefly describe your research/activity?
I work with local Colleges and schools to introduce how to use drama as a critical Pedagogy
Why does your research/activity matter?
This work introduces alternate arts based learning into very traditionally positivistic spaces that are the result of colonization rather than cultural growth.
What led you to this research/activity?
I have long been interested in the ways that people learn outside of institutionalized imposed white supremacist ways of knowing. The arts for me work as a way to create a space where how and what and why people learn comes from the individual first and foremost discovering their own sense of reality. I have been doing this type of work in the US for over 20 years. I first worked in Puerto Rico as a result of my marriage and in Haiti as a result of work with my church.
What problem do you hope this research/activity will solve/what are your hopes for this work?
Ultimately this work could contribute to the revitalization of indigenous non-white ways of knowing changing the the way western educators understand not only their imposition and closing of the human creative mind, but also opening up spaces for a multiplicity of ways of doing education and educational research.
