Please briefly describe your research/activity?
I am interested in exploring maker culture and education, focusing on impacting factors of making, functions of co-working, and shared innovation, relationship between maker education and creative industry.
Why does your research/activity matter?
In China, most maker spaces couldn’t operate continuously and then even close down, while some other relatively mature maker spaces have begun to serve the real economy, such as Beijing makerspace, mainly focusing on technology of intelligent hardware products, and have reached cooperation with some leading companies, will commercialize products of some start-up companies. It's imperative and recognized to study maker education and make culture.
What led you to this research/activity?
Maker movements, growing vigorously in many countries, have been highly valued by governments and people. Both in USA and China, the rise of maker movements in the early twenty-first century was regarded as an opportunity to revive the manufacturing sector and an important engine of the new round of economic innovation. Makers actively create new things through online technical exchanges, offline production. I hope to learn their ways and means of maker education in-and out of school.
What problem do you hope this research/activity will solve/what are your hopes for this work?
This research will try to analyze related factors and dynamics of maker movements, study the rise, development of maker culture and its function and value, explore how to cultivate various types of innovation teams and maker culture with creative, entrepreneurial awareness and ability so as to promote the development of maker spaces and innovative economy.
How will your work create change for the better?
Well, maker movement is emerging and expanding rapidly, research on it is also in the initial stage especially in China. Wish to investigate and follow more maker spaces, start-up firms team or established firms maker team, makers, so as to learn about the developing station of maker spaces and cultural characteristics and background of various kinds of creative groups, meanwhile, to explore forming mechanism and characteristics of maker culture.
