International Women’s Day Spotlight: Alumna Dr. Shameem Farouk |
Friday March 8th was International Women’s Day. We celebrated by recognizing one of SoE’s trailblazing international alumna! She is Dr. Shameem Farouk (IST, PhD Wright School of Education, 2010) & (MBA, Kelley School of Business, 2000). | | | | |
Dr. Farouk is Executive Vice President in Maybank Group in Malaysia. She focuses on developing innovative learning solutions for the digitalization and sustainability of the workforce, including high quality learning programs to foster education equality across minority and traditionally disadvantaged workforce groups. At Maybank she has introduced numerous innovations such as the Artificial Intelligence Learning Hub, the Maybank Excel Artificial Intelligence Tool, Adaptive Learning Engine, Fintech & Startup Immersion Program, Go Disrupt Challenge, Impact Learning Methodology, Career Pathing Decision Support Tool. The Maybank’s Social Media Marketing and Digital Market Intelligence programs which Dr Farouk initiated have generated over USD $1billion in sales revenue

Student Spotlight: Zixi Li Bridges Her Passion for Tango and Academic Pursuits |
Zixi Li, an international student from China, is currently pursuing her PhD in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests have centered around self-directed learning, professional development, online language learning, and instructional design. She is a rigorous researcher during the day, but a passionate Argentine tango dancer at night. In fact, tango helped her become a confident woman and inspired her academic pursuits, particularly in the area of tango teachers' self-directed professional development. Supported by her colleagues, Chen Feng and Xiaoying Zheng, under the guidance of Dr. Curtis J. Bonk, her tango research team recently won the AECT Research and Theory Division Outstanding Conference Proposal for their
project, "Investigating the Self-Directed Learning Process in Argentine Tango Learning." They'll be presenting their tango research, titled "Using Mixed Methods to Better Understand the Teaching and Learning Strategies of Argentine Tango Instructors and Learners," at the 2024 Dance Studies Association meeting in Buenos Aires this July! | | | | |

Faculty Spotlight: Adam Scribner on the Galápagos Islands for Environmental Education |
The Director of STEM Education Initiative in the SOE Adam Scribner traveled to the Galápagos Islands, together with Professor Michael Hamburger (Department of Earth &Atmospheric Sciences), and Molly Fisher (IU Global, Mexico Gateway office between February 3-11, 2024 for a project collaborating with La Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) to deliver professional development and co-design international environmental education programs for K-12 teachers in the Galápagos Islands. Their visit included meetings with representatives of the USFQ, the Galápagos Science Center, the Charles Darwin Research Station, the Scalesia Foundation, and teachers and administrators from the Tomas de Berlanga (TdB) School in Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos.

SoE Global Gateway for Teachers Hosted Universität Hamburg’s Pre-Service Teachers |
The Global Gateway hosted three pre-service teachers, Derva, Maja, and Luisa-- from the Faculty of Education of the Universität Hamburg (UHH) from February 7 to March 8. Also visiting for one week was their Project Coordinator, Nicolai Pudimat. The pre-service teachers were in Bloomington to fulfill an initial field experience as part of their UHH teacher education program. They were placed at Binford Elementary School, where they interned with the 4th grade team. Additional experiences centered included The PATH School, Global Preparatory Academy, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, and Patricksburg Elementary School in Owen County. They engaged in numerous activities at IU, such as the women’s basketball game between
IU and Purdue, and the Chinese calligraphy workshop at the SoE. They also sat in on classes in the SoE and toured the Education Library. “We are not only interns here but also welcomed as IU students. We have Crimson Cards and access to all facilities that give us the full experience of living in an American university,” Derva said. Their visit is the continuing international collaboration between IU and UHH. | | | | |

The Global Institute for Transformative Education (GITE) in conjunction with Nuestra Escuela in Puerto Rico are organizing the Third World Conference on Transformative Education (WCTE) in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 4-6, 2024, under the theme: “Transformative Education in the Americas”. The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), and the School of Education at Indiana University are the co-sponsors of this hemispheric event.
