Dorothy Slota, Undergraduate Recorder and the Licensing Advisor in the Office of Teacher Education

Dorothy Slota
Undergraduate Recorder and Licensing Advisor

Dorothy Slota has been the Undergraduate Recorder and the Licensing Advisor in the Office of Teacher Education since the late 90s.

The work that Dorothy does greatly impacts School of Education students in a positive way. To many, Dorothy is the “woman behind the curtain” due to the fact that her job description includes an understanding of ever-changing state policies for teacher certification. Sharon Vance, Mary Hardesty, and Barb Frye work closely with Dorothy in the Office of Teacher Education. Dorothy feels fortunate to work with such a dedicated staff who collaborate to meet the high demands of the positions she holds. “I couldn’t do what I do without the support of these people,” she says.

Any given year, Dorothy and her team may process up to 2500 applications for teaching licenses. At the same time, Dorothy is meeting with students and going through senior checks to ensure that they have met all the requirements needed to graduate.

Dorothy is originally from Indiana and holds a BS from the School of Education at IU. After graduation, she taught for 2 years in an Elementary School in Hammond, Indiana. After moving to Bloomington, she taught for 10 years at a local pre-school before returning to the School of Education as a member of Student Services in 1988. She has since worked as a scheduling officer and worked with the advisors for admission to TEP before starting her current position. Dorothy’s husband is a psychiatric nurse who, along with her three children, also graduated from IU. She has four grandchildren in Indianapolis who she visits often. When she is not at work, Dorothy might be found in a craft room that she has in her house where she keeps busy with varying projects, such as homemade greeting cards and cakes of all different flavors, which have been featured at recent weddings. Although she recently celebrated her 60th birthday, Dorothy doesn’t see retirement in her near future.
