Reading Certification

Available to both current Teacher Education students and licensed teachers, these programs are designed to meet the requirements for State of Indiana Reading Licensures. These programs build specialized knowledge and proficiency in teaching literacy and qualify you for professional positions that require advanced knowledge of reading.

Level I Reading License Additions

The Level I Reading License Additions provide specialized knowledge required for positions as reading resource teachers. They also benefit classroom teachers who want to enhance their knowledge and skills for teaching reading. Additions qualify teachers to teach reading at the grade levels authorized by the elementary or secondary teaching license. These license additions require twenty-four (24) semester hours which include courses in reading methods, literature, linguistics, and critical issues for the reading professional. The license addition is available in both undergraduate and graduate levels. Graduate students may use appropriate courses from their undergraduate program to apply toward these requirements. These new Rules 2002 license additions went into effect July 1, 2006.

The license addition may also be combined with master’s degree programs in teacher certification areas. An application form is available in Suite 1000 (School of Education). A 3.0 GPA is required. Graduate students must meet criteria for admission to a graduate Literacy, Culture, and Language Education Masters program or be admitted to a graduate licensure program such as Community of Teachers or Transition to Teaching Program.

Level II Reading Specialist License

The Level II Reading Specialist License requires the completion of a masters degree in education. This program qualifies candidates for positions as K-12 reading specialists in curriculum and instruction as well as reading resource teachers. Students must have completed the Reading Level I License Addition program and hold a valid teaching license. For further requirements, visit the page listed above.
