New leadership appointments in the IU School of Education

Several faculty members are taking over new administrative roles in the Indiana University School of Education starting July 1, including new appointments to the roles of executive associate dean. “We are very fortunate to have such an outstanding group of faculty willing to serve the School of Education and Indiana University in these key leadership roles,” said Gerardo M. Gonzalez, University Dean of the IU School of Education. “They are an incredibly experienced group who bring a wealth of talent to their respective administrative positions.”Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs, Don Hossler returns for a second term as Executive Associate Dean on the Bloomington campus. Hossler served as Executive Associate Dean for a year until IU appointed him as Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services from 1997 to 2006. Hossler takes over for Pete Kloosterman, who served since 2003.
At the IU School of Education at IUPUI, Pat Rogan, professor of Secondary Special Education, takes over the position of Executive Associate Dean. She is currently chair of Secondary Education, and served as Chair of Graduate Studies and Continuing Professional Development from 2002-2005. She replaces interim Executive Associate Dean Chris Leland. Leland has filled the position since Khaula Murtadha, Executive Associate Dean from 2001 through 2007, stepped down late last year. Murtadha is now IUPUI Associate Vice Chancellor for Lifelong Learning and Executive Director of the Community Learning Network.
Joshua Smith, assistant professor of Educational Psychology at the IU School of Education at IUPUI, is the new Director for the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education (CUME) after serving as its associate director. He studies educational transitions including the transition from middle school to high school and the transition from high school to college.
Also on the Bloomington campus, Bob Sherwood, professor of Science Education, is the Associate Dean for Research. Sherwood, who came to the school in 2006, was Program Director at the National Science Foundation for two years while on leave from his faculty position at Vanderbilt University. He is filling the chair vacated by Cathy Brown, who leaves after ten years as Associate Dean for Research. Tom Brush, associate professor of Instructional Systems Technology, is the new Associate Dean for Teacher Education. Brush chaired the Bloomington Committee on Teacher Education from 2006 to this year. He’s worked to help pre-service teachers acquire skills and experience to effectively use technology in their future professional placements. Brush comes in after David Estell’s tenure as interim Associate Dean for Teacher Education.
Ada Simmons becomes the Director of the Center for P-16 Research and Collaboration, the center in the School of Education to facilitate partnerships that lead to educational improvement from pre-kindergarten through postsecondary education. Simmons has been the Associate Director for Research and Executive Associate Director of the center. Her research focuses on issues of educational equity, including minority disproportionality in special education and juvenile justice, and the role of finances in P-16 educational access and achievement.
"I am looking forward to working with each of these new leaders to build on the tradition of acdemic and administrative excellence for which the School is known," Gonzalez said. "I would also like to thank those who have previously served in these roles. They have done so with distinction."
