Area Students Pack the hall for 2008 African-American Read-In

Thursday, February 21, 2008

IU students and local high school students participated in the 6th annual African-American Read-In on February 4 at the Neal Marshall Black Culture Center. The event is organized by Stephanie Carter, assistant professor of Language Education at the IU School of Education.

Students gathered to hear works from great African-American authors such as Langston Hughes, Carter G. Woodson, and Toni Morrison. But most importantly, they shared their own work. You can see and hear their work in this short video.

The national African-American Read-In started in 1990 as a project of the black caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  In seventeen years, the NCTE estimates over a million have participated in the event in 49 states, the West Indies and some African countries.   NCTE promotes the event nationally as a part of February’s Black History Month celebrations. More information on the national African-American Read-In is available at http://www.ncte.org/prog/readin/107901.htm.
