Higher Education & Student Affairs Assistantships
This is the largest category of financial assistance for all graduate students at IU. An assistantship is required for students in the Master's program (This is expected to be a paid position).
Most graduate assistants are appointed to work between 15 to 20 hours per week (.375 to .50 or full time equivalent). Stipends typically range from $5,000 to $12,000 for two semesters, plus a full or partial fee scholarship.
The selection process for most graduate assistantships is highly decentralized at IU. Each site has different needs, application deadlines, interview procedures and expectations. In addition, many departments at IU offer assistantships, research associate, and associate instructor positions throughout the university. Department chairs and program heads play a role in appointing graduate assistants and in keeping abreast of assistantship opportunities in administrative offices and in externally funded grant and contract projects. Applying for graduate assistantships is much like searching for full-time employment. Most assistantship sites require a cover letter and resume, interview and some have specific applications. However, websites are increasingly becoming a viable source for new postings.
Prospective Higher Education and Student Affairs students can view a list of offices that typically employee our master’s and doctoral students. Current position openings will be sent directly to students who have received conditional academic admission to the program.
A clearing house for available assistantships in the School of Education has been established at the Office of Human Resources- School of Education 4150, Bloomington, IN 47405-1006 (812-856-8055). Additional assistantship opportunities at IU are also posted at the IU GradGrants Center.
