After teaching second grade with the Teach For America Program in the Mississippi Delta, Emily entered law school at IU in 2006. During law school she was an associate instructor and taught undergraduate school law courses to preservice teachers. Emily continued teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses focused on school legal issues for teachers and administrators at the School of Education while pursuing her PhD in Education Policy. She is currently working on her dissertation on the federal legal remedies that students with disabilities may access when harassed in school while working as an attorney at the Indiana Department of Education. Emily helped publish a book to assist instructors of school law and has several other education law publications under review. Emily Richardson serves as the Interim Executive Director and the Director of Legal Affairs & Policy for the Indiana Charter School Board (“ICSB”). In this role, Ms. Richardson facilitates compliance of the ICSB with all relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations. She also advises the ICSB on any new laws and regulations that pertain to charter authorizing and charter schools. Ms. Richardson also plays a lead role during the charter school application cycle, and in holding ICSB-authorized schools accountable for their performance. Prior to joining the ICSB, Ms. Richardson served as Assistant Director for the Office of School Improvement and Turnaround for the Indiana Department of Education, as well as a staff attorney for the Indiana Department of Education.
