1Prepare Your Application
The Graduate Studies Office will complete applications after the deadline up until a few weeks before the semester starts. This does not guarantee your application will be reviewed by faculty as different programs have different availabilities. If you are applying after the deadline or for a semester without a posted deadline you should confirm with the department that they will still be reviewing applications before applying.
A complete application consists of not only the application but also required transcripts, letters of recommendation, test scores, personal statement, and anything else required. In order to have met the deadline all materials must be received by the deadline date.
The Community of Teachers (CoT) program is designed to address the needs of graduate students who are preparing to become secondary teachers, including those who are currently teaching with a provisional teaching license. CoT is a competency-based program which can be completed either full time or part time. Teacher candidates work with a mentor of their choice in an ongoing field placement. Weekly seminars focus on student-selected themes that aim to bridge educational theory and practice in the context of community. Admission requirements include a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a personal statement. (See below for details.) Once we have received these materials you will be contacted to schedule an in-person or phone interview.
Submit one official transcript from each college or university you attended where you attempted 9 or more credits. Transcripts may be sent to us by either the institution or you; however, transcripts must arrive in a sealed, official envelope. Loose or opened transcripts will not be accepted.
Electronic transcripts are acceptable if the transcript is official and comes directly from the University or appropriate transcript service. Please have the transcript sent directly to the Indiana University, School of Education, Graduate Studies Admission Office firstname.lastname@example.org.
You do not need to submit transcripts from Indiana University. We will be able to access your IU transcript directly.
Personal Goal Statement
Your personal statement is an important part of the review process. You should include your professional goals related to education, why you want to become a teacher and why you think why you are a strong candidate for the CoT program. The document should be prepared using a word processing program (not handwritten) and should be 300 to 500 words. You can upload your personal goal statement as a PDF file or as a Microsoft Word document into the online application itself.
Indiana Core Academic Skills Assessment (CASA) (or approved alternative)
The state of Indiana requires that you demonstrate basic competency in reading, writing, and math to obtain a teaching license. You may do this by taking the CASA exam or by documenting competency in one of the following ways:
- ACT with a score of at least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science
- SAT with a score of at least 1100 based on Critical Reading and Math
- GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative (taken prior to 8/1/11)
- GRE with a score of at least 301 based on Verbal and Quantitative (taken on or after 8/1/11)
- Having a master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
Use school code 1324 when you request to have your CASA scores sent to us.
2Complete Your Application Online
Faculty members in the program to which you are applying will make initial decisions about admissions. After faculty members review applications, they make their admissions recommendations to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, who makes the final decision.
Note that faculty members will not review your application until it is complete. After you submit your application online, you will receive an email listing all of the supporting documents that have yet to be received (if any). We recommend that you submit your application well in advance of the deadlines to allow time for all materials, including official transcripts, to arrive before the deadline.

You will get an email if your application is incomplete, or if you’ve been admitted or denied.
