Education Policy Studies
Title image

The ELPS department offers both a doctoral major and a minor in Education Policy Studies.

The scholarly study of education policy involves an intensely theoretical examination of the ways in which education policy is determined, and an intensely practical examination of how that policy can be implemented to improve human lives and prospects. The major in Education Policy Studies encompasses, therefore, a wide range of humanities and social science disciplines, in order to explore the moral and cultural purposes of policy, the educational procedures available to achieve those purposes, the social and political processes by which the educational purposes and procedures are authorized, and the organizational and cultural factors that affect the implementation of policies. To that end, the program of studies includes:

  • a core of studies in policy analysis that includes social and economic theory
  • a concentration in a particular context for policymaking: elementary and secondary education, higher education, or international and comparative education
  • a minor in a relevant discipline ranging from philosophy and history to economics and anthropology, with a focus on its unique methods for analyzing policy.
