Professors from Moi University in Kenya Visit

Last fall, before the political turmoil began in Kenya, two professors from Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya visited the IU School of Education at IUPUI as part of a continuing exchange between the school and Moi. The IU School of Education at IUPUI is working on a continuing relationship with the school of education at Moi University, located in Eldoret, Kenya, a city in the western portion of the country, about 192 miles northwest of Nairobi. The IU School of Education is enhancing a longstanding IU partnership with the African nation. The IU School of Medicine joined forces for health care in 1989, primarily focusing on fighting the AIDS pandemic. In this short video, you will hear from the professors about their visit to learn more about improving teacher preparation and about the school's hopes for the Kenya project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Missing Male Teacher

School districts and teacher preparation programs should collaborate more and schools should promote gender equality and social justice to help alleviate the lack of male teachers in U.S. public schools according to a new Education Policy Brief from the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at Indiana University. The study called "The Status of Male Teachers in Public Education Today" by Shaun P. Johnson, a graduate research assistant at CEEP, concludes that the lowest percentage of male teachers in decades—only 1 in 10 elementary school teachers is a man—is a threat to gender equality, social justice, and other democratic values. Schott Foundation CEO John Jackson speaks at IU School of Ed

The former chief policy officer of the NAACP spoke on the Indiana University campus September 13 about what he sees as a potential problem for the U.S. economy—failing to properly prepare some of the fastest-growing segments of the population. Dr. John Jackson, President and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education presented "Leaving Our Children Behind: the Cost to Our Nation." The following video includes excerpts from his speech.
