About Me | Media

ABOUT ME

I try to innovatively teach instructional systems technology courses (many via distance education--Web and videoconferencing), do research on collaborative and emerging educational technologies, and promote a more learner-centered approach to instruction. I am a former accountant, corporate controller, and CPA. Next I became an educational psychologist (now former as well I guess). All of those degrees were taken up in Wiscconsin, as I am from Milwaukee originally and then Madison, Wisconsin. Now in my third career (I guess) and hoping to move into career #4 at some point and be a professional speaker and writer. I moved from educational psychology to the IST department in July 2005 after serving in ed psych for 13 years (Note: I was also in the educational psychology department at West Virginia University before that for 3 years so I have 16 years in that field and now 10+ in IST). I am also adjunct in the School of Informatics.

I think learning should be an adventure and I am often the tour guide or expedition leader. Lately, I think of myself as a learning concierge and learning resource curator.

I have given more than 1,500 talks around the world for college faculty, corporate trainers, and K-12 teachers on how to teach on the Web (see http://www.trainingshare.com/). I also have more than 300 publications (see http://www.publicationshare.com/ for examples) including 10 books (see bookshelf: http://worldisopen.com/bookshelf.php). I have a free e-book in English and Chinese on online motivation and retention which came out in May 2014 (see: http://tec-variety.com/) and a book and special journal issue on MOOCs and Open Education Around the World as which both came out in early July 2015 (for free preface, see: http://moocsbook.com/).

You can find a my bio, personal vita, online pictures, course information, personal blog (http://travelinedman.blogspot.com/), sample talks, online publications, and other information at my homepage. See Bonk's e-Learning World at: http://php.indiana.edu/~cjbonk/. You can also email me at cjbonk@indiana.edu; I typically respond within an hour or two unless I am traveling (which, as noted above, happens a lot). I am interested in emerging learning technologies, open education, online and blended learning, nontraditional, informal, and extreme learning (http://www.extreme-learning.org/) (think "not-school"), the social context for learning, global and international education, innovation and creativity, interactive and engaging pedagogical strategies with technology, and perspective taking or social cognition. My syllabi and associated resources are normally posted online somewhere (see http://php.indiana.edu/~cjbonk/course.html).
