Laura L. Stachowski, Ph.D. is the Director of the Cultural Immersion Projects at Indiana University, administering and supervising the Overseas Project (placements in Australia, China, Costa Rica, England, India, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, and Wales), the American Indian Reservation Project (placements in the Navajo Nation), the Urban Project (placements in the Chicago Public Schools), and the Overseas Practicum for Experienced Teachers. Dr. Stachowski was an Overseas Project participant in 1979 and served as an Associate Instructor in the Overseas Project, and as the Assistant Director of the Cultural Immersion Projects prior to becoming Director in 1995. Dr. Stachowski received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University in 1994. She is a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Send me an email
Katie Cierniak is the Assistant Director for the Cultural Immersion Projects. Katie participated in the American Indian Reservation Project in the spring of 2003. After earning her degree from Indiana University through the Teaching All Learners program, she moved to Madison, Wisconsin to begin her teaching career. She taught for five years in Madison as a special education teacher in inclusive classrooms and as a Reading Recovery teacher. She returned to Indiana University to pursue a degree in International and Comparative education, and served as the Associate Instructor for the Urban Project during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Nancy Boatner is the Cultural Projects office manager, working closely with the staff and students in all aspects of program operations. She came to Indiana University from the University of Michigan where she worked in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, advising graduate students with their program degrees and undergraduates with their major concentrations and course schedules. She was also the department coordinator for the Summer Language Institute and the Eastern Summer Language Consortium. She is currently involved in two community out-reach programs; Partners in Education which is a mentorship program for 8th grade students in local middle schools and Lotus Blossoms Children's Bazaar which is an organization that provides local fourth grade students multicultural education through interactive performances from artists/educators and hands-on multicultural bazaar.
