The Indiana Council for the Social Studies is the premier professional organization of social studies teachers in the State of Indiana. The organization was founded in 1938 and has been in continuous operation since that date. The organization supports quality social studies curriculum and instruction in Indiana's schools, by providing members a professional environment to grow and their knowledge and experiences with other practitioners. Each year, the ICSS has an annual convention bringing together classroom teachers, university faculty, guest speakers, representatives of organizations for various subject area organizations, and publishers/vendors. General sessions are integrated with workshops, a Keynote Address, and a featured speaker.
In 1977 the Indiana Council for the Social Studies began affiliation with Indiana University’s Social Studies Development Center (now the Center for Social Studies and International Education). From 1977 to 1991 the executive director of ICSS was a staff member of the Social Studies Development Center, who worked hand in hand with social studies teachers throughout the state of Indiana. From 1992 to 2005 ICSS moved to Purdue University returning to Indiana University’s Center for Social Studies and International Education in 2006.
ICSS publishes ViewPoints, the organization's newsletter and maintains the ICSS website - http://indianacouncilforthesocialstudies.shuttlepod.org/
