Turkey Armenia Summer Teaching Institute

In the Summer of 2011, CSSIE hosted a six-week professional development program for Turkish and Armenian English language teachers focused on opportunities for authentic and contextualized language learning through civic education content and practical classroom teaching strategies. This project was designed to provide participating teachers with new ways of approaching their practice, and to assist them in developing a new set of skills to enhance their students’ language proficiency as well important civic skills to contribute to the social, cultural, and political progress of these two countries. Among the project’s objectives are enhancing teachers’ leadership and instructional skills, improving teachers’ and students’ attitudes toward their counterparts in Armenia and Turkey, and leveraging current instructional technology to set up interactive and collaborative online language learning activities for Turkish and Armenian students. As part of the ongoing activities, teachers and students in both contries continue to collaborate on projects through the online exchange portal developed for the project.
