9th Annual IST Conference -- summary from this year's student coordinator Rod Myers

The 9th Annual IST Conference was held on Friday, February 27, 2009 in
the W. W. Wright School of Education at Indiana University -
Bloomington. This year's conference featured 27 sessions by students and
faculty on a wide range of topics relevant to our field. The conference
began with a plenary session by Dr. Dee Andrews of the U.S. Air Force,
who discussed potential opportunities for collaboration with our
program. Dr. Jeffrey Bardzell from IU's School of Informatics delivered
what we hope people found to be a mind-opening keynote presentation on
Aesthetic Interaction. Over 80 people gathered in the School of
Education auditorium for Jeff's talk, including many students and
faculty from Informatics and SLIS. Videos of both presentations are
available on the IST Conference website at
http://istconference.indiana.edu/.

Nearly 90 people formally registered for the conference, including a
dozen online attendees and several distance students who traveled to
Bloomington from as far as Michigan and Arkansas. Over 30 attendees
enjoyed the buffet lunch catered by Bloomingfoods that featured Chicken
Mongolian Barbecue, Ravioli Pomodoro, and a Tofu Pot Pie that had even
carnivores in line for seconds. The highlight of the evening reception
was the traditional basket raffle that raised $150 for next year's
conference. Ph.D. student Jesse Strycker walked away with three baskets
and refused to reveal his winning strategy.
