Professional Academic Writing
(Section Number 14782)
Instructor: Dr. Judith A. Chafel
When:Thursdays from 4 until 6:45 p.m
Where:Room 3004 Education Building.
Course Description: This seminar focuses on scholarly writing in the academy. The course provides a broad overview of the various forms of writing that faculty do: conference proposals and presentations, grant writing, journal articles, and book reviews. Class presentations, discussions, guest speakers, and assignments, will introduce you to what’s involved in successful academic writing. We will concentrate our efforts on helping you to develop an engaging writing style, to understand the requirements of different genres of scholarly writing, and to revise your writing based on peer review. We will talk about what it takes to become a published author, including identifying an appropriate journal, writing for a particular audience, and interpreting editorial feedback/review.
Students enrolled in the course will be asked to select a paper already completed as part of their coursework to develop into an article of publishable quality. Although submission to a journal is not required, they will revise that paper with publication to a specific journal in mind.
