A Senior Checklist
IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO!
- _____ Attend Student Teaching application meeting.
These meetings are held in the fall semester of the school year before you plan to student teach. For most of you, this means that you'll attend this meeting during the first semester of your junior year. Click here for further information about application meetings.
- _____ Complete testing.
Before student teaching and before admission to TEP, students must have completed and passed the Paper-Based Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). The Secondary Special exams of the National Teacher Examination (NTE) could be taken after student teaching. Careful planning is especially important for social studies and science majors. Special education majors should check with an academic advisor. Specialty exams must be taken and passed before licensure is granted.
- _____ Check eligibility.
Two semesters before graduation, arrange for a senior check with the Records Office (856-8527), Suite 1000. During the semester prior to student teaching, you should carefully check your eligibility status. If you discover problems with your eligibility to student teach, you should immediately contact an advisor, and communicate this information to the Director of Student Teaching, via email: stuteach@indiana.edu. ONESTART will give you access to your IUCARE report.
- _____File an application for degree.
You should do this at the Records Office in Suite 1000 one semester before you plan to graduate.
- _____Complete a criminal history check.
This must be done before you begin student teaching. Forms will be given to you during your Pre-Professional meeting held in April and/or November, or may be downloaded and printed by clicking here. If you are student teaching in the Indianapolis Public Schools, you will follow a somewhat different set of procedures. These forms will be given to (IPS) students teachers during the Pre-Professional meetings. Many schools require a criminal history check before officially confirming a student for placement.
- _____Establish a placement file.
Go to the Career Services Office in Suite 1000 to set up your placement file and to obtain your placement file number. It is best to do this during the semester before student teaching. Many students find it helpful to take Education M202, a one-credit pass/fail course, about the job search.
- _____File an application for a teaching license.
This should be done within two weeks of graduation. Applications are available at the front desk in Suite 1000.
Note: Passing scores for ALL National Teacher Exams must be on file with the School of Education before applications can be processed.
