Pawan, Faridah

Assistant professor in the Language Education Department and the director of the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Program (ICP), Faridah Pawan is currently working on the following diversity-related research projects:

  • Interdisciplinary Collaborative Program (ICP)

Over a period of five years (2001-2006), the ICP will bring together English as a second language (ESL) specialists, ESL teachers, and content area teachers to provide a more equitable education for students learning English as a second language in Indiana.

The ICP will assist content and English as a second language (ESL) teachers in developing a collaborative model which is focused on an integrated curriculum. The ICP participating teachers will attend professional development workshops and 3 graduate level courses in ESL instruction and assessment provided by Indiana University Bloomington. Upon completing their first year, ICP team teachers will successfully employ researched-based ESL instruction and alternative assessment methods in their culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms and collaborate as mentors and trainers with other teachers in their school corporations.

There are three ongoing research projects in the ICP. Culturally-Sensitive and Sheltered Instruction through teacher collaboration is the mainstay of the research project on the impact of teacher collaboration on the achievement of second language learners.
