Learning Sciences, Media, and Technology Certificate

Learning Sciences seeks to involve and create opportunities for all children and adults, making learning possible, available and better. Our approach to online education is exciting, and builds on current scholarship to blend the benefits of online with the benefits of face-to-face classes.

Online Courses in Learning Sciences, Media, and Technology (LSMT): This selection of courses provides a unique opportunity to develop a strong foundation in learning theory while building a repertoire of designing learning environments and assessing learning for the 21st century curriculum. Rather than teaching particular skills related to technology or media usage, the focus of this program is on the intersection of learning, media, and technology.

The LSMT courses *** are designed to help transform your perspective on how learning occurs in the rich, complex contexts that are important to you. Learning contexts are defined by the people who participate in them, the technologies that are present, and the social norms that structure how people work, play, and interact with others. Regardless of whether you are interested in formal schooling, after-school clubs, or the kinds of online environments that people access primarily from home, the LSMT courses will help you think differently about how people are learning. The courses listed below, which are all available online only, are designed to help you further your own career goals whether they are in schools, industry, or preparing yourself for an advanced degree program in the Learning Sciences or related fields.

Online courses

  • P507: Assessment in Education (Offered Spring, 2012) In this course students will learn at least the primary assessment formats in a range of digitally mediated contexts.
  • P574: Games and Learning (Offered Fall, 2012) In this course, students will explore the power of games for education. Students will play games, read about games, theorize about games, and even modify existing games.
  • P540: Learning and Cognition in Education (Offered every semester) In this course, students learn to apply established theories about cognition, learning, memory, and motivation. Students work in teams organized around the primary content areas (literacy, comprehension, writing, science, and mathematics).
  • P574: Learning in New Media (Offered in 2012-2013) This course uses a hands-on studio art approach to explore how current literacy theory and research in arts education, media education, and computer science applies to learning in new media.
  • P574: Computational Technologies in Educational Ecosystems (Offered in 2012-2013) This is a survey course designed to help participants think about how different technologies can best be used to support a variety of learning contexts. We will examine a range of technologies from games to simulations to blogging, and a range of contexts from science classrooms to informal after school programs.
