Currently, a doctoral student in mathematics education, my academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s in math with a math education concentration. For well over a decade, I have been teaching mathematics at the collegiate level. In addition to teaching traditional post-secondary courses, there has been a strong interest in the field of distance and blended education with respect to math – particularly the impact of electronic learning with its effects and facilitation of how students learn the content. Shifting now to the big ideas, for the moment anyway, my overarching interests in the field include:
· Understanding algebraic conceptual development and its misunderstandings among post-secondary students,
· Improving collegiate level mathematics pedagogy (nice idea in theory), and
· Exploring the socio-philosophical aspects and meanings of math in society.
Well that is it for the time being … more to come later.
