ABOUT ME

I conduct research in the area of emergent technology, cognition, learning and instruction. I develop new learning technologies (robotics, virtual reality, and web-based video) and use a strong social-cultural theoretical base to explore, develop and research new ways to understand and learning that are enabled by these technologies. I work in science, mathematics education and teacher professional development.

DEGREES

Ph.d. Instructional Design and Technoogy, December 1991, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

BS Elementary Education, 1985, Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI

TEACHING

PUBLICATIONS
  • QUEST ATLANTIS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING UNIT Goal – To create a Quest Atlantis learning environment that will be used to conduct research on chemical education and learning. Outcome – We have prototyped a chemical engineering “profession” with in Quest Atlantis that will enable learners to understand the concepts of chemical reactions and the influence of heating and catalyst. This is done in the conceptual framework of a profession where learners apprentice with trainers that help develop better methodologies for creating beneficial chemicals for their communities.
  • QUEST ATLANTIS FIREWORKS UNIT Goal – To create a Quest Atlantis learning environment that will be used to conduct research on mathematics education and learning. Outcome – We are developing a prototype a long-term “profession” with in Quest Atlantis that will enable learners to understand the concepts of whole number addition, subtraction, mutliplication, and division. This is done in the conceptual framework of a profession where learners apprentice with trainers that help develop better methodologies for creating bigger and better fireworks show for their communities
  • VIDEO RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TOOLKIT SOFTWARE Goal – To develop a robust video-based research and professional development tool that will meet the needs of the School, and the Learning Science Students and Faculty. Outcomes – We have prototyped a working tool that enables researchers and teachers to video capture classroom practice with multiple cameras, “bind” video with other non-temporal data (student work, lesson plans, tests, etc.), analyze the video with a robust coding infrastructure that enables sharing video and coding schemes, and the ability to create video cases for reporting on research and developing professional development video-based materials. In 2008 we will be working with 67 different faculty to beta-test these tools.

PRESENTATIONS
  • Hay, K.E. (2008, July) Conceptual Play Spaces, Models and Professions. Presentation at the annual Games, Learning, and Society Conference.  Madison, WI
