Options for getting a master's degree and a teaching license
Several departments within the School of Education offer master's degrees that may integrate well with teacher certification programs. Common choices are degrees through the Curriculum and Instruction Department (Art Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Science, Math, Social Studies, Special Education) and Language Education. Several Master of Arts in Teaching degrees are available in the University Graduate School through a specific department, e.g., Mathematics, Biology, German, Spanish, etc. Please consult the department or Graduate School Bulletin for most current information. Students should seek advice from both an advisor for certification and a faculty advisor for the master's degree; students must meet requirements for each program .
A student may apply for the desired master's degree and indicate that he is also seeking teacher certification, either as an initial certification or as an addition to an existing license. For degrees in education, the student must apply for the master's degree before accumulating more than 15 cr as a certification student if the coursework is to be used for a master's degree. Financial assistance may depend on whether a student is seeking a master's degree (with certification) or a certification-only program.
