Tips for Prospective Graduate Students
If you are anticipating attending Indiana University, seasoned grad students suggest that you take a couple of days to visit Bloomington and do the following:
- Visit the IU Graduate Student and Professional Organization for information on real costs, transportation, parking, campus housing, a great link for off-campus housing (that few know about), and all other kinds of graduate survival and merriment.
- Visit the school, meet with professors (they are very friendly and give good advice), talk to students, get a feel for the campus and town. You can schedule a campus tour or check other admissions information at http://www.indiana.edu/~iuadmit/.
- Look early for housing. While there is no shortage on housing, Bloomington is known for wonderful architecture, beautiful woods, and lovely historic homes. The most interesting, unusual and economical places are taken earlier in the spring. Plan to look for housing when you visit campus.
- Ask about Graduate Assistant positions (GAs). There are numerous part time jobs available that may even cover your tuition costs. Ask the faculty for leads. They want their graduate students to have these opportunities and are eager to help you find funding.
- Contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance, if you feel that you would be interested in student loans check out http://www.indiana.edu/~sfa/
- Enjoy yourself! There are endless unusual and interesting ways to get out and enjoy this place.
