Resources
I.U. has many support services for students. These range from academic support services, housing, financial aid, and legal aid to recreational facilities. Some of the resources available to students are listed below.
Academic Support Services
There is extensive computer and technological support for students at IU. Computer labs with a number of facilities are located all over campus, and a large number of computing education programs are offered etc. Students have access to a Writing Tutorial Service which provides individual tutoring to students working on writing projects and to the Student Academic Center that provides assistance for student learning.
Libraries
The University has numerous libraries located throughout the campus. Database search facilities, microfiches, and photocopying machines are available at all of them, and the main library has a staffed reference desk to aid students.
Support Groups
There are many student support groups that provide assistance to individuals. The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs has a website for Diversity Resources. There are also resources such as: the Asian American Association, Latino Unidos, the Islamic Center of Bloomington, Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, Disability Services for Students, and GLBT Student Support Services.
For international students one important source of assistance on campus is the International Center and the Office of International Services. The Office of International Services assists students in dealing with issues like visas, work authorizations, insurance, social security, tax procedures etc., while the International Center concentrates on arranging orientation programs for foreign students and, organizing forums for students to meet and share cultural information. The various national student organizations and groups, also offer support services to students from their home country.
Children
Many facilities are available to children of students at I.U. The University offers Child Care Services. Recreational facilities for children are also often offered in Family Housing, especially during vacations.
Employment
The Career Development Center provides services to meet the career related and employment needs of students. It has a career resource library, provides career counseling services, and conducts different placement programs. Information about job vacancies is made available throughout the year at the Student Employment Office, for both jobs on and off campus, and for work study and non work study positions. The School of Education lists work opportunities on the Human Resources web page where Assistantship and hourly job openings in the field of education are regularly posted.
Financial Assistance
The Office of Student Financial Assistance provides information on fellowships/loans available to students. And the GradGrants Center offers assistance to graduate students in locating grants and fellowships in all areas of study. Information about some awards and grants administered by the University Graduate School is also available online.
Housing
Dormitory and apartment style housing are offered by the University. For further information on University Housing look up the web site maintained by the IU Halls Of Residence. Another source of information on housing available for sublets or on lease (both on and off campus) is the website of the GPSO (Graduate & Professional Student Organization) Housing Resources Page and Housing Bulletin Board. The Indiana Daily Student (a student newspaper) also carries advertisements about housing in its classified section.
Health
The IU Health Center is located on campus and provides day to day health care services for a nominal charge. Bloomington Hospital provides facilities for health problems requiring more specialized attention.
