How to nominate or become an Armstrong Teacher Educator
Each candidate for the Armstrong Teacher Educator award must be nominated by the superintendent in his/her district and by his/her principal. At the end of November each year, information about this award is sent to principals and superintendents in every school and school district in Indiana. Superintendents may choose to nominate an exemplary teacher, or a principal may suggest to the superintendent that a teacher from his or her school be nominated. Eligibility
Candidates must be K-12 Indiana schoolteachers with at least five years of experience.
Deadline and process for nomination
Nomination materials for the 2012-2013 Armstrong Teacher Educator Award must be submitted electronically or postmarked no later than January 18, 2012. The nomination packet must include the following:
- A letter of recommendation from the teacher’s superintendent
- A letter of recommendation from the teacher’s building principal
- A letter of recommendation from a teaching colleague
- A current résumé of the nominee
- A one- or two-page narrative, prepared by the nominee, and designed to help the selection committee understand what is truly special about this teacher. The narrative may include:
- An explanation of unique classroom projects or activities
- An account of innovative or creative pursuits
- A description of leadership in a school, community, state or national organization
- An information summary form prepared by the nominee (obtainable by clicking this link)
Preparing a better application
- Every teacher deserves praise, but recommendations should be specific and list examples.
- Please let us know unique things about you and your teaching or about the teacher you are writing about.
- If you have acronyms that are unique to your background or school, please spell them out for us and explain them.
- When appropriate, applicants are welcome to send copies of additional documents or links to work of which they are particularly proud.
Time Commitment and Reporting
Recipients of this award are expected:
- To make semi-regular trips to Indiana University to collaborate with faculty and take part in the life of the School of Education during the school year they are honored (September 2012 – May 2013).
- To file a report at the end of their active school year detailing their IU-related teacher education activities and accomplishments and to fill out an evaluation/reflection sheet.
- To attend the Celebration of Teaching (late April 2012) and two Summer Retreats (June 29 & 30, 2012 and late June 2013). At the Celebration of Teaching the Armstrong Teacher Educators will be formally honored.
- At the first Summer Retreat (June 29 & 30, 2012), the Armstrong Teacher Educators will meet with IU faculty and with colleagues from the previous Armstrong cohort, and begin making plans for active involvement during the upcoming school year. At the second Summer Retreat (late June 2013), the Armstrong Teacher Educators will present a version of their annual activity report to new Armstrong inductees and to Armstrong alumni.
