7th Annual African American Read-In Kicks Off Black History Month

Famous and New Authors Featured

Posted On: February-6-2009

Around 150 Bloomington high school and IU students participated in the 7th annual African-American Read-In at Indiana University on February 2, 2009.  This short video presents highlights from original works read by the authors.

Associate professor in the department of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education, Stephanie Carter, organizes the event at IU.  The national African-American Read-In started in 1990 as a project of the black caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  NCTE promotes the event nationally as a part of February’s Black History Month celebrations.

You can read more about the event as reported by local media. Here is a link to a story by WFIU radio, and here is a link to the story featured in the Bloomington Herald Times.
