Frequently Asked Questions
Title image

How do I apply?
The application is online at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=iu-bla. Applying online is strongly recommended.

If you are unable to apply online you may complete the paper application which can be downloaded from http://www.indiana.edu/~grdschl/gradapp.pdf. This method is not recommended as it takes much longer to process.

How firm is the application deadline?
For international students deadlines are very firm. You should apply as soon as possible. If accepted you will need as much time as possible to get your visa.

The Counseling and Educational Psychology and Education Leadership and Policy Studies department deadlines are also very firm. Many (not all) CEP and ELPS programs do not allow students to begin in the spring; they review applications only for fall admission. The majority of Counseling MS admissions are done very soon after the March 1 deadline, so late applicants may find the program already filled.

The School of Education does not refuse to accept any late applications. However we cannot guarantee that late applications will be reviewed in time for the student, if admitted, to be enrolled in the original semester desired. Matriculation may have to occur in a later semester.

Do I really have to submit my GRE scores? Can I get a waiver?
GRE scores are waived for

  • ANY certification-only or certificate-only applicant (domestic or international), except Transition to Teaching. You never need GRE scores for certification-only programs except for T2T. See below in this list for details on when GRE scores are needed for Elementary Transition to Teaching.
  • domestic applicants to any Curriculum and Instruction master's program with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and above
  • domestic applicants to any Language Education master's program with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and above
  • domestic applicants to the Educational Leadership master's program with an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and above
  • Elementary and Secondary T2T (Transition to Teaching)
    • domestic T2T Elementary Certification Only and Certification with master's applicants: GREs waived only if undergraduate GPA is 3.0 or higher
    • domestic T2T Secondary Certification Only and Certification with master's applicants: GREs waived only if undergraduate GPA is 3.0 or higher

No waivers for international students, except certification-only; international applicants for degree programs MUST submit GREs.

*Note about GPA-based GRE waivers: the GPA needs to be a final, cumulative undergraduate GPA for a finished degree (not a degree in progress) in order for the automatic waiver to apply.

Can’t you just use my previous GRE scores?
GRE scores must be less than 5 years old compared to the date of the online application submission.

Do I really have to submit TOEFL scores?
There is NO waiver of TOEFL scores for international applicants, except:

  • If the applicant is an IU current student or alumnus/alumna and has not left the country, he/she is not required to provide TOEFL scores.
  • If the applicant is an IU alumnus/alumna who has left the U.S. and lived abroad for a year or less, no TOEFL is required. If the applicant has lived abroad for more than a year since graduating from IU, he/she must provide TOEFL scores.
  • If the applicant has a recent (within past 3 years) earned degree from a reputable U.S. institution of higher education and has left the U.S. and lived abroad for a year or less, no TOEFL is required. If the student has lived abroad for more than a year since graduating from the U.S. institution, he/she must provide TOEFL scores.
  • Citizens of Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, English-speaking Canada, and Caribbean nations (such as Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and many others) do not have to provide TOEFL scores, unless their first language is not English.

Can’t you just use my previous TOEFL scores?
TOEFL scores must be less than 2 years old compared to the date of the online application submission.

My GREs won’t be submitted by the application deadline. Can the department still consider my application without GREs, or give me a conditional acceptance until the GREs come in?
No. GREs must be submitted before the application will be considered by the department.

My GREs are lower than the recommended minimum of 900. Should I still apply?
Although specialist and most master's programs require a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 900 and a 3.5 score on the analytical writing section, applicants may apply if their GRE scores are lower than this. Admissions committees review applications in their entirety, and GRE scores are considered as one of several elements in the applicant’s record. It is the applicant’s choice, whether or not s/he wants to apply.
